The Alfa Romeo Tonale is a compact SUV that combines electrified engines, Italian style, and modern features to create a unique driving experience. With its 1.5-liter 48-volt mild-hybrid four-cylinder variable geometry turbocharged unit and a potent 280hp Plug-in Hybrid petrol AWD Q4 model, the Tonale offers impressive performance and efficiency.
Design and Heritage
The design of the Tonale features historical brand cues, such as the Zagato SZ-style headlights and the ‘telephone dial’-style wheel design. The GT line running down both sides of the car gives it a sporty look, while the ‘Teledial’ alloy wheels are one of Alfa Romeo’s signature looks. The Tonale PHEV wears 20-inch alloy wheels, and the exterior design blends advanced technology with great design elements. The car is available in four colors: ‘Electric Blue’, ‘Montreal Green’, ‘Vibrant Red’, and ‘Gunmetal Grey’.
Interior and Features
The cabin of the Tonale is well-equipped and features digital screens, providing a sports car feel with optional luxury finishings. There is an option for synthetic leather for the top-of-the-range model for vegan-friendly driving. The shift paddles next to the steering wheel may not be useful for day-to-day driving, but they add to the sporty atmosphere. The Tonale is available in two trims; ‘Ti’ and ‘Veloce’, with an additional ‘Speciale’ launch version. All variants come well-equipped with Alfa’s usual ‘DNA’ drive mode selection system and other features.
Performance and Efficiency
The Tonale Plug-in Hybrid Q4 accelerates from zero to 62mph in 6.2 seconds and onto a top speed of 84mph in full-electric mode. All Tonales sold in the U.S. are plug-in hybrids with a battery range of more than 30 miles and a gasoline engine for more power and longer drives. The PHEV combines an electric rear axle with a 1.3L turbocharged four-cylinder engine, offering a total horsepower of 285 and 347 pound-feet of torque. All-wheel drive is standard, and the Tonale has four drive modes: D – dynamic, N – natural, A – advanced efficiency, and ESC off.
Pricing and Competition
The Tonale is priced comparably to its most obvious three rivals, the BMW X1, the Audi Q3, and the Mercedes GLA, with prices ranging from $42,995 to $49,695 excluding a $1,595 destination charge. The Tonale shares its platform and other underlying parts with the Dodge Hornet SUV that just went on sale. Manufactured in Naples, Italy, the Tonale combines elements from Alfa Romeo heritage and Italian style with modern ingredients, such as a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, safety, excellent connectivity, and controls.
