In the past couple of years, there have been rumors about the next-generation GT-R, maybe even a move to electrify GT-R to futureproof its professional machine status. However, it was not until a few months ago that Nissan confirmed the R36 supercar.

The Aussie division of the company retired the V6 machine. This was on grounds that it does not meet the side-impact crash regulations anymore. However, it will only be temporary since the Nissan AU states that this will not be the end of GT-R in Australia.

The CEO of the Nissan Motor Company, Makoto Uchida spoke to Autocar about what direction the flagship sports car from Nissan would take. Though he did not dive into specifics, he stated that the team behind the GT-R project was looking to see how the car can be electrified. He continued to state that the machine was professional, and there was a need to work it out in the future.

Uchida also added, “Whether we go to a lot of electrification or none at all, we can achieve a lot power-wise.” This implies that Nissan may decide to electrify GT-R, specifically the GT-R R36.

Irrespective of the context, the head of the company disclosed that the high-performance coupe will ride on a new platform. This will be unlike the latest Z sports car that has 370Z-based underpinnings which have been reworked.

Whichever form it ends up taking, the long-awaited GT-R is expected to be the fastest car of its kind. It will definitely tap into some technology even if that does not necessarily mean that it will go electric. There are also high chances that the R36 will not be going to Europe given the stricter emissions regulations. It is for this same reason that the new Z will not be going to the continent either.
